Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI)

Nationwide Surveys
The Independent Data Collection Center (IDCC) conducts high quality, scientifically rigorous, small and large-scale surveys using Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) technology. Surveys from 5 to 90 minutes in length are conducted in multiple languages with general and targeted populations and numerous ethnic groups and cultures.

CATI Capabilities and Staffing
IDCC has a highly trained staff of 100 telephone interviewers (25% bi-lingual) at its nationwide CATI survey center. IDCC uses industry-leading WinCATI (Ci3) Sawtooth software utilized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for BRFSS and BRFSS-protocol health studies. We also use INTERVIEWER software by VOXCO, which has outstanding capabilities for multi-language interviewing and excellent algorithms for respondent randomization.

Survey Testing, Review and Oversight
IDCC implements, manages and monitors all steps in the survey data collection process in-house. After an initial survey instrument is approved and programmed into CATI software, IDCC pretests a sub-sample of the total survey sample. If changes are needed, the survey is revised. Once the questionnaire is finalized, IDCC begins full-scale interviewing with weekly progress reports. Our supervisors closely monitor our interviewing staff to ensure all project specifications are met and all survey questions are communicated in a clear, unambiguous and appropriate manner. Researchers can monitor our interviewers personally at our CATI center or off-site by telephone. Survey response rates are calculated using the AAPOR and CASRO formulas.

Reporting of Survey Results
IDCC delivers completed data sets in SPSS, ASCII, SAS, or Excel format via email or by express mail on a CD. A comprehensive technical report of the methodology is included. Statistical reports can be in topline form or in full written format with analysis. Statistical printouts and cross-tabulations (banners) are also available.
